How to save money whilst visiting Madeira island

More Madeira, but for less money.. Is it possible do you think?

Believe me; there are ways and I’ll share some of them here with you.

First of all, lets be real; Madeira is not the cheapest destination and like many other locations, prices have gone up in recent years.

Please know that I do not promote budget travel nor ways to stay somewhere for free, as I do believe that quality has an honest price and it is always worth to support the local economy of places like Madeira, so that we can sustain it for future generations!

That being said, here are my top 5 tips on how to save money whilst visiting Madeira

1. Book directly with your accommodation: Instead of booking through platforms like Airbnb or Booking, try reaching out to the local owners directly. You can still use the platforms to check availability and reviews, but by booking directly you usually save money and help the local owner too.

2. Reserve your rental car in advance: Don’t wait until you arrive to book your car. Rental companies know that demand is higher on the spot, and they’ll often raise prices if availability is low.

3. Eat where the locals eat: Madeira’s food is incredible but avoid the tourist traps. try local markets up in the mountains or small tascas where the food is authentic and still very affordable.

4. Explore free hikes and viewpoints: everyone knows the famous PR hiking routes, but there are still plenty of trails and viewpoints that are free to visit, and usually away from crowds too!

5. Use public transport instead of a rental car: this takes a little more planning, since Madeira’s public transport is mainly designed for school and work commutes, but it is worth it as you’ll both get to see the island from the window seat.

Bonus tip: Plan your trip in advance: this goes for flights, accommodation, car rentals, and even day trips. Booking early saves money and avoids stress.
